An Examination of Communication Studies in Taiwan, Hong
Kong, Macao, and Overseas Chinese Societies

(University of Rhode Island, Kingston, Rhode Island, USA.)Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine Chinese communication studies in the areas of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and overseas, and further propose a direction for the future development of Chinese communication studies in Chinese societies. First, the author uses a tree as a metaphor to define the field of communication studies. The communication tree is then used to analyze communication studies in the above areas. Second, the author separately examine the history and research of the three well-established Chinese communication associations, including ACCS, CCA, and CCS, that together can reflect a picture of communication studies in the above areas. Lastly, the paper argues that under the impact of globalization, it is necessary for domestic and overseas Chinese communication scholars and associations to cooperate and integrate their efforts in order to survive and make contributions to the global society.
